Korey – Feller & Climber in Training
Korey is the newest addition to That Girl Tree Care, and Ashley couldn’t be more stoked to have her on board. She comes from the world of wildland firefighting in Washington State and brings that same grit and drive to the job site. She’s tough as nails, quick with a saw, and already feels like part of the crew.
Like Ashley, Korey’s no stranger to pushing limits—she’s hiked the entire Pacific Crest Trail. That kind of endurance, curiosity, and respect for nature makes her a perfect fit for tree work. Now back in Iowa, Korey is learning to climb, sharpening her felling skills, and diving headfirst into the arborist life—with Ashley showing her the ropes (literally).
When she’s not working, Korey’s probably outside: fishing, kayaking, foraging, or tending to a native-species garden she keeps with her partner. She’s an artist, a conservationist, a beer lover, and someone who’s always up for the next challenge—with a go-with-the-flow attitude and a solid pair of boots.

What It Takes Wednesday - a spare tire! đ„đ
Today threw us a surprise—flat tire and all—right in the middle of our schedule. Classic curveball!
But no sweat—Mandy was already in action, calm and capable, changing that tire like it was just another item on the to-do list. The rest of us jumped in where we could, cracked jokes, held tools, and kept the vibe high. đđŒđ
That’s what it takes. Not just one person stepping up—but all of us showing up. Helping, laughing, moving forward together.
Today was a mess. And we crushed it. đȘ

Mandy – Aerial Lift Operator & Estimator
Mandy’s been riding shotgun with Ashley since 2019, back when they worked together at another tree company—and Ashley couldn’t be luckier to have her on board at That Girl Tree Care. A Certified Arborist and TRAQ-qualified, Mandy brings brains, brawn, and a whole lot of tree knowledge to the crew. She’s especially skilled at felling trees, navigating risks from the canopy, and nerding out over all things arboriculture.
When she’s not in the lift or meeting with clients, you’ll probably find Mandy out in the woods, kayaking, camping, lifting weights, or watching sports. She’s got a love for nature science, cold beer, good fires, and chopping wood like a champ. She’s also big on time with her wife Angie and son Max, her friends, and her community.
Working alongside her bestie (yep, Ashley), Mandy helps make That Girl Tree Care not just a job—but a damn good crew to be part of. (Photo credit- Amy Rose)
We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off our Meet the Crew series than with the one who’s been here from the very start! Betsy is celebrating her birthday today! Everyone please wish her a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Betsy – Groundswoman & Pruning Specialist
Betsy was the first to join That Girl Tree Care, and the company simply wouldn’t be what it is without her. She stood by Ashley through the scrappy startup days—when equipment was scarce, work was inconsistent, and the days were tough. Ashley will be the first to say: Betsy’s loyalty, strength, and steady presence helped build the foundation this company stands on today—and she can’t thank her enough.
With a quiet, creative spirit and a love for working hands-on, Betsy thrives on the ground—handling brush, shaping trees, and keeping the job flowing smoothly. She prefers firm footing to high climbs and has a sharp eye for structure and detail.
Outside of tree work, Betsy runs her own business, Boots Trading Co., where she makes organic skincare products, hand-designed hats and shirts, and custom laser-engraved goods. Basically, if it’s artful and handcrafted—she’s on it.
She’s also known for being a dog lover, a true snack connoisseur, and for having the unmistakable voice of the crew—literally, it’s the deepest one. Oh, and rumor has it she’s on a first-name basis at just about every coffee shop in Iowa City.
Check out her work at @boots_trade_co

What it Takes Wednesday: TEAMWORK!!!
Ashley just took home 1st place at the Iowa Climbing Competition!! đ„đ„ But here's the thing—this win wasn’t a solo climb.
From warm-ups to wild routes, Ashley had the support of incredible people: fellow competitors offering tips, family encouragement, and friends with nonstop energy. đ It’s easy to think of climbing as an individual sport, but it’s the team behind the scenes—the cheers, the high-fives, the shared stoke—that truly powers the ascent.
Now, it’s time to take that momentum and head to INTERNATIONALS in NEW ZEALAND! đłđżđ Let’s keep climbing, together.

đ What it Takes Wednesday - Dream BIG đ
It takes courage to chase growth.
It takes strength to believe in your vision.
And it takes guts to take the leap—even when it's a big one.
We’re proud to share a major milestone for That Girl:
đȘ We just invested in a brand new lift—a bold move to keep us growing, climbing higher, and serving our customers even better.
This wasn’t just a purchase. It was a commitment to our future, our team, and the quality we stand for.
Because growth doesn’t come from playing it safe—it comes from stepping up, digging deep, and doing what it takes.
Here’s to big moves, brave choices, and strong roots. đł

Knocked out a small cleanup job in an overgrown patch for a client. These are the ones we love—nothing like seeing the transformation when it’s all said and done! Mitch was running saws, Mandy was working magic on Clawdia, and I was doing my best brush-dragging impression. Good crew, good day! #treeworklife #arborist #letsdothis #teamwork #femaleentrepreneurs
Hey fur-iends, it's me DUG!
Ashley wouldn't let me on the computer Friday because she said "estimates were more important" đ (whatever those are).
BUT guess what? She's up in a tree right now, so I finally got my paws on the keyboard đđ»
I wanted to show off my pictures from Friday—I was very helpful, obviously. Aren’t I the cutest little assistant you’ve ever seen? đ¶đł

“My husband totally surprised me with this beast of a saw this week!! I never thought I’d run anything but a Stihl, but I am beyond stoked about this Echo 2511T. @iowa_performance_saws_llc tore it down, ported it, upgraded the muffler, dialed in the carb—now this thing absolutely rips, just like my MS201!
The craziest part? It’s nearly HALF the size and almost 5 pounds lighter, with the best power-to-weight ratio out there. After a long day climbing, that weight difference is a total game-changer! Can’t wait to put it to work! #ClimberLife #TreeWork #Echo2511T #ChainsawPower
What a weekend! Despite the nerves, I’m always so grateful I put myself out there and competed. The growth and confidence that come from stepping outside my comfort zone are always worth it! Everyone has slip-ups, but the real key to success is learning to be kind to yourself in those moments. Every competition teaches me something new, and I leave feeling even more excited for the next one.
I’m incredibly thankful for the amazing tree family I’ve found in my local chapter and for all the new and old friends I get to spend the weekend with. And having a husband who’s just as excited to cheer me on? đł "What It Takes" Wednesday - Certified Arborist đł
Did you know there are only 11 certified arborist in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City and 2ïžâŁ of these amazing women are on our team?!?! đȘ
So what does it take to be a certified arborist, and why should you hire one? Great question! đ
Certified Arborists have at least three years of hands-on experience in tree care before they can even take the exam. Once they pass the rigorous test, they continue their education to stay up-to-date with the latest industry practices and techniques. đ±đ
Hiring a certified arborist means you’re working with someone who is committed to the health and safety of your trees, follows a strict Code of Ethics, and is always learning to offer you the best care possible. đżđȘ
Is your tree being trusted to a certified arborist?

“This year marked my 10th annual Shade Tree Short Course, and I look forward to it every year! It’s an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow tree enthusiasts, immerse myself in the latest industry knowledge, and continue growing in my field. This year was especially meaningful as I got to bring Mandy along and reconnect with one of my best friends. Over the years, we’ve built an amazing group of knowledgeable and passionate women (though we were missing a few in our group photo!).
Lifelong learning is a priority for me because staying informed allows me to apply the best practices in the field—ensuring your trees remain happy, healthy, and thriving!” Side note: check out our new job site sign, thanks to @h.virginiana ! #alwayslearning #themoreyouknow #femaleentrepreneur #femalearborists
Hi! That’s me, DUG, and I just wanted to introduce myself! đŸ
I'm the unofficial mascot of "That Girl" Tree Care, and you may see me helping Ashley with her tree estimates! đł When I’m not out cruising around in the work truck, you can find me going full speed at the beach or munching on popcorn (my favorite)! đż At 14 years old, I’m still the fastest and fluffiest around. Got a tree that needs an estimate? You may see me there—just follow the popcorn trail. đ

First event down!! Didn’t go as well as I hoped. A new piece of gear (first time using it) lead to using an unfamiliar rope. The rope was a bit more bouncy than I am used to leading to some slips. On the disconnect I should have gone a little higher and landed a lil short of the bell adding some time. Still having a blast talking with all the bad ass lady climbers! Stoked to be here and learn from the best!
Had a big project recently that had us removing some overgrown Hemlock’s so they can start over with some new trees! It was a lot of hard work but we managed to have fun! I am excited to announce that there will be a new voice answering some of the calls at "That Girl" Tree Care!
This year has been incredibly busy, and I am deeply grateful for your support and trust in allowing me to care for your trees. However, keeping up with office tasks, emails, and phone calls has been challenging, leading to long hours. To provide the best service with clear and prompt communication, I have hired Megan to assist me.
Megan is exceptionally talented in efficiency and organization, particularly in office-related tasks, which are my weak points. She will be handling phone calls and emails related to estimates and scheduling, as well as identifying and improving any inefficiencies within the company.
Please bear with us as Megan gets acquainted with "That Girl" Tree Care.
Please all the new business line to schedule estimates and consultations!

We had a storm roll through with some heavy winds that caused a lot of damage. This one was a Bitternut Hickory that lost its main leader. Here at “That Girl” Tree care we like to have fun but also work hard! I use Friday’s as my estimate days. Today while I was out. I found Michelangelo in the middle of the road. So I got out and made sure he made it across safely! Betsy and I were lucky enough to get invited to a fellow tree service called, Advantage Tree service aerial rescue course! Where we got to learn how to properly save someone who is hurt in the tree. We also learned how to not become a victim ourselves! An article in 2019, ranked the tree industry the 4th most dangerous job in the country. We are wrapping up Oak season for my pruning area! Here was a Shingle Oak that the homeowner planted that she got from her parents farm years ago! I’ve been lucky enough that I have got to take care of her the last few years. She’s always so fun to climb with her sprawling branches. We only pruned for house clearance and large dead that could potentially hurt someone. We even got Betsy up in another tree for a dead and broken hanger! #ilovemyjob #oak #womenintrees #womenintrades #femalearborists #climb
Had a huge snow storm blow through at the beginning of February. Our White pines got hit hard. My husband snapped this one of me trying to takes some of the snow off the limb to lift it up a bit before we removed it. The limb was over the power to the house. The client had called the provider to see if they could come out and take care of it but they were so busy with down lines due to the heavy now. There was another round of 10 inches of snow coming so we decided to get it down just incase so they wouldn’t lose power. #femaletreeclimber #femalearborists #femaleentrepreneur #stormwork #treeclimbing
This past summer I had a fun job of putting a bat box up on a tree that failed in a past storm. I am beyond thrilled to share a moment of great joy and gratitude with each and every one of you. Today, my journey in the world of trees took a giant leap forward. This morning I added a new member to the “That Girl” Family - My very own chipper! Properly named (Sir Chips A lot).
This milestone wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of my clients, friends, and well-wishers. Your trust and belief in “That Girl” over the past year has been the driving force behind this exciting chapter of my life. From the bottom of my heart, I want to express my deepest gratitude for the unwavering support you've shown.
As I embark on this new chapter and a new year with Sir Chips A Lot, I want to take a moment to remember and honor someone incredibly special. My mom, who recently passed, would have been incredibly proud of this achievement. She was my biggest cheerleader and supporter. Her spirit and love for life will always be a guiding force in my journey.
Each tree I have tended to, every task I’ve undertaken, and every smile shared along the way has played a crucial role in bringing me to this moment. Your confidence in my services has fueled this growth, and I am genuinely humbled by the positive impact we've been able to create together.
I promise to carry forward the values she instilled in me - dedication, hard work, and a commitment to providing the best service. As I navigate the future with Sir Chips A Lot, it's not just a machine; it's a symbol of progress, hard work, and the shared commitment to my clients.
Thank you to everyone that has believed in “That Girl” and given me the opportunity to work for you. You are the roots that anchor me and the branches that help “That Girl” reach new heights. Here's to the journey so far and the exciting journey ahead!
With heartfelt appreciation,

Had the privilege to give some talks a Kirkwood community college last week. Talked to the women’s club, Forestry class and a landscape class. I got to talked about what it’s like owning my own business and how it’s ok not to know what exactly what you want to do in life at that moment and being a women in a male dominate industry.
It was so neat to be back and see my teachers that I had when I was going there. I can not express how much I enjoyed my time at Kirkwood and the teaches I had. Shawna and Ken went above and beyond when I was there and still are to this day. It was also so neat to see how the program has evolved though the years. It was such a great experience! It's not all about trees and making money with me. A big part of my journey is about connecting with people. Often, we get so caught up in our daily lives and glued to our phones that we forget to give strangers a chance or our time. But last year, while on a trail, I experienced a beautiful shift. We relied heavily on the kindness of strangers, and it opened up a whole new world for me. Taking the time to get to know someone, even if it's just for a brief moment, can lead to incredible discoveries, inspiration, and even new friendships.
Recently, I had the wonderful privilege of helping out a client named Jim. He had a tree that was a little too close to his house, and he needed my assistance in bringing it down. We worked together, and it was not only a smooth process, but we also had an amazing time. And guess what? I made a new friend in the process! đ€â€ïž
This experience reminded me once again that life is about more than just the tasks we do and the money we make. It's about the connections we forge and the impact we have on others. So let's remember to give strangers a chance, to offer kindness, and to cherish the moments that can change our lives forever! #femalelumberjack #femalearborists #womenintrades #newfriends #makingconnections #bekind

Happy Women's History Month! It's time to celebrate the amazing contributions and achievements of women throughout history. March is a month to recognize the often-overlooked role that women have played in shaping our society, culture, and politics. It's a time to recognize women's ongoing struggle for equality and renew our commitment to advancing women's rights and opportunities.
At “That Girl” Tree Care, we want to honor Rosie the Riveter, a cultural icon that emerged during World War II. Rosie empowered women by challenging traditional gender roles and demonstrating that women were capable of doing jobs that were traditionally considered to be men's work. She encouraged women to take up jobs in industries that were previously dominated by men, a significant step towards women's empowerment.
In the tree care industry, we're proud to have some incredible women breaking down barriers and challenging gender norms. From climbing tall trees to wielding chainsaws, these female tree care professionals are just as capable as their male counterparts. They've shown incredible strength, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity, proving that gender is not a barrier to success. We honor all the badass women in the tree care industry with this special graphic, or possible t-shirt? They serve as an inspiration to other women who aspire to succeed in traditionally male-dominated fields. Let's continue to celebrate and uplift women during Women's History Month! đȘđł #WomenInTreeCare #WomenInHistory #RosieTheRiveter #GirlPower #BreakingBarriers #TreeCare #InternationalWomensDay #EmpoweredWomen #GenderEquality #ThatGirlTreeCare #femaleownedbusiness #arborist #femalearborists

What else to do when its -20 degrees with wind chill? I decided to sit back with a coffee and play with Ai Generated art. This little comic book type story was wrote completely by Ai, and all the photos were created with Ai also. Dropped them into Illustrator and created the layout. It was a fun winters day project! Hope you enjoy!
Post 2- These photos document my first tree job as the proud owner of my own LLC, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride. The day started off like a scene straight out of the Arctic tundra, with icy conditions and temperatures so cold, I had to dig out all the winter gear I own just to leave the house. 6 layers of shirts to be exact plus long underwear haha, But as the day progressed and the sun came out, all bundled up in my winter gear, it felt good to order my poor husband around while he did ground work. :-) ( We make a great team! )
But despite the freezing temperatures, the tree work went just as planned and as smoothly as possible, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and accomplishment!!
Looking forward to many more jobs to come!! #femalearborists #treework #arborist #femaleownedbusiness #treecare #treecareindustry #femaleentrepreneur
